In the first few sections, you will set up image planes of the front and side views and use those image planes to help you achieve the basic shapes and proportions using both nurbs and polygons. Then we will shape the geometry to create a clean and efficient model that will be about 2500 polygons.

Once our model is complete we will shift into laying out flat effective UV's using the UV editor. Some of the tools we will be using include move and sew UV's as well as cut UV's. After our UVs are flat we will take a UV snap shot and import it into a paint program. There, we will learn how to hand paint textures using layers as well as a few filters to get our character really looking like our character design sheet.

- Locally Shared Objects (basically, Flash "cookies") are created to save the form for filling in later.
For example, fill in some of the fields in the sales page. Press TAB or "Save Form", then close the window and come back. Upon return the information filled in previously will appear. This is a good feature for lengthy forms that might extend over multiple swfs.

- Restrict input text to specific characters. Also error messages can prompt users about typing restricted text. You can test this out in the Order # field on the sales page. If you type letters instead of numbers, an error prompt will show up.

- Prior to submitting the form, required fields can be tested for accurate info. For example, if you exclude the @ symbol or a period in the Email field, the form will prompt you to enter a valid email address

- Learn to use four common Components: Checkboxes, Label Buttons, Pulldown Menus, and Scrollbars. Also these components can workhttp://www.blogger.com/img/gl.link.gif together, for example certain pulldown menu's will switch the checkbox to being selected.

- Scripted Motion Tweens can be added to make user messages slide in instead of appearing abruptly. You can test this out in the Order # field. If you type letters instead of numbers, an error prompt will slide / fade in.

- Input and Dynamic Text boxes are taught extensively.

Part 1 - Stuff You Probably Already Know.
All the basics: Tables, Text, Images, Embedding Flash, FTP (uploading from Dreamweaver)
If you've never taken a course in Dreamweaver, and are fairly new to basic HTML concepts, definitely
pay attention to this course. Past CartoonSmart Students that have taken a previous Dreamweaver course, won't find much new info until around 55:00. New methods of Embedding Flash are discussed, as well as where to write alternate text for search engines to spider. And finally, how to make a Flash movie transparent, to see through to the html below (1:05:00)

Part 2 - Text Formatting and Design Layout with CSS
CSS gets discussed a little in every lesson from here on, but this video focuses primarily on it. The first 23 minutes go into what exactly CSS is, how it works, and where to write it. For this part of the lesson, we'll apply CSS mostly to text examples (color changes, font size, font type , etc). From around 23:00 onwards, the video goes into how to use CSS to layout your designs. This is a big departure for those of you that usually lay out your HTML page using tables or frames. This is one of the cooler aspects of CSS. The video also goes into how to set multiple Page Styles using an external css page or display different content for handheld devices. (45:00)

Part 3 - Basics of PHP and Coding a PHP Mail Form
From 0:00 to 13:00, the video discusses how to write PHP variables and create a simple IF / ELSE statement to write html to the screen based on a true false variable.
13:00 to 42:30 teaches how to build an image gallery using query string variables to control which image is currently being seen. This is a common method for web comics sites, that have an archive of images. Instead of creating a new HTML page for each image, one PHP page changes the current image and href links based on a PHP variable.
42:30 till the end, teaches how to build a simple form and PHP submission script. This will mail the contents of the form to an email address. A host to upload to is required for testing the PHP files, but you do not need access to a database.

Part 4 - Various Buttons and Navigation Methods

Part 5 - Variable Contingent Designs, PHP based Client Login and Javascript Examples
0:00 to 23:00 - Using an Entrance Page to a site to gather user info (like what Country they are from) Then diverts them to a unique page or a common page that uses a different external css file based on their info. This uses CSS and PHP. This could also be used for triggering randomly different page styles.
23:00 - 45:00 programming a PHP based client login. Note this doesn't make use of a database. You would enter username and password info for a particular client into a PHP file, which would then be checked against everytime the client went to login. This is a simplistic login, but good for web developers looking to give their clients hidden preview pages to look at work. PHP session variables are also taught.
45:00 to 57:00 Javascript Examples. Pop up Window, Fullscreen, Automatic Page Resize, Image Rollovers and Shaking the screen (pointless, but fun)

Part 6 - Odds and Ends - Quicktime Embed Code, Meta Tags, Site Map, Final Design

Simply Maya - Freaky Low Poly

If you like stylized and fun low poly characters then this tutorial is for you.You will learn all the steps needed to make an organic game character from image plane to a completely textured low poly model.

In the first few sections, you will set up image planes of the front and side views and use those image planes to help you achieve the basic shapes and proportions using both nurbs and polygons. Then we will shape the geometry to create a clean and efficient model that will be about 2500 polygons.

Once our model is complete we will shift into laying out flat effective UV's using the UV editor. Some of the tools we will be using include move and sew UV's as well as cut UV's. After our UVs are flat we will take a UV snap shot and import it into a paint program. There, we will learn how to hand paint textures using layers as well as a few filters to get our character really looking like our character design sheet.

Robot Arena

So what exactly is Robot Arena? Well, Robot Arena is a new computer game for the PC developed by Gabriel Interactive and published by Infogrames. It is based on the popular hobby/event of robot combat, where competitors build robots and use radio controllers to drive them and fight against other robots in an enclosed battle arena. Some of the contests you may have heard of include BattleBots and Robot Wars. Both have regular television shows following the competitions.

Yes, those are REAL robots with REAL weapons and motors and batteries that attack and chop, saw or otherwise mutilate one another. Robot Arena, the game, is not a real life event, but instead allows common folks like you and me who have no engineering skills whatsoever (and don't want to spend thousands on robotics parts) to build robots and fight them in a simulated enviroment.

Here's briefly how it works. You can do two main things in the game: build robots and fight with the robots you have made. You can only work with one robot at a time, but you can build and save as many bots as you like. In the Bot Lab, you choose from various chassis types, armor, mobility, weaponry, and accessories to assemble your robot. Each component has various properties such as weight, energy required, strength, and damage abilities.

Once you've built your robot, you can take it into the arena to fight against an opponent. The game allows you to play several types of matches: a practice session, which is to help you learn to play without risking damage to your newly created bot; a tournament match, in which you fight against a series of computer opponents for the championship title; a custom challenge, where you can make wagers against computer players in non-tournament matches; and multiplayer mode, where you can fight against your brother, friend, uncle, dentist, etc. over a local network or the Internet.

You can play to the death, or pick a flag match, where the first player to destroy their opponent's competition flag wins. The flag can be attached anywhere on your robot and must be guarded well. You can also specify time limits for the match. In the event that neither player destroys the opponent or their flag, a judge will decide who inflicted more mayhem on their foe.

Some techie junk: we recommend a Pentium 450, 64 MB RAM, and a 3D video card, though it will run on slower systems, too. Sorry, Mac users, this one's for Windows only.
