The tutorial is aimed at people who have an understanding of the fundamentals of Maya, Photoshop and Zbrush. EngineThe project begins by setting up image plains in Maya to use as a reference guide for the start of the model, then gets straight to business by blocking out the basic forms using polygons. The following chapters then take you through an overview of a modelling process to help you finish the vehicle off. Techniques such as looking at real world references, path extrusion, radial placement and mesh extraction of objects are covered here as well as the standard modelling tools of Maya. Once the majority of modelling is over its time to begin setting up the model for Engine Wiretexturing and how to set up a uv map and optimise it in Maya’s Texture editor. On completion of the uv map the next chapters look at creating texture maps to help give the model a more realistic look. As well as using Photoshop for this process, you’ll be introduced to Zbrush. Using both programs separately and also in unison, you’ll see how to quickly achieve good looking textures. In the final chapters the textures are placed onto the model ready for rendering in a scene using just a 2d image as a background and a ground plane for shadowing. Then, rendering using Mental Rays Final Gather and a few spotlights, an overview is given showing how to make the Vehicle ‘fit’ into the 2d backdrop, similar to techniques used in motion pictures and television. This tutorial is geared for intermediate Maya users. If you're into fun, stylized characters then this tutorial is right for you!. We begin this tutorial by setting up images to assist us in modelling the correct size and proportions of our character. The modeling techniques used will be shaping in nurbs, converting to polygons to add details and then into sub'ds to define the final shapes. Some of the tools covered in the modelling sections are split polygon tool, cut face tool and sculpt surfaces tool, just to name a few. Once the modelling of our new character is complete we move toward preparing our model for texturing. We learn how to lay out and edit UV's for all the different geometry of the body to make it flat so we can get a clean workable UV snapshot for our painted textures. Tools covered in the layout section include planar map, cylindrical map, and automatic map, as well as move and sew UV's. Once the Uv's are finished and you have your snapshot we jump into a paint program add colour and texture to our model. We will learn how to use layers for different areas as well as staining up certain parts of the body to get a more realistic look. The last section covers how to texture a few of the nurbs surfaces of our character such as the hair, using Maya built-in shading networks. We will start off this tutorial by using image planes of side and front views. The modeling techniques used will be shaping in nurbs, converting to polygons to add details, and then into sub’ds to define the final shapes. When the modeling of our character is complete we move toward preparing our model for texturing. We do this by laying out the Uv’s for all the separate parts of the body to make them flat so we can get a clean UV snap-shot for our painted textures. Tools covered in the layout section include planar map, cylindrical map, and automatic map, as well as move and sew Uv’s. After the Uv’s are finished and your snap-shot is taken we jump into a paint program to start adding color and texture to our model. You will learn how to use layers for different areas as well as how to stain up certain parts of the body like the head and shirt for a more natural look. Starting with a static photo of an oil refinery, Alex integrates 2D and 3D elements using Maya, After Effects and Photoshop. CHAPTER 1: SPRITE RENDERED SMOKESTACKS | 467 MB CHAPTER 2: SKY AND WATER REPLACEMENT | 479 MB CHAPTER 3: ROLLING SPRITE FOG | 322 MB CHAPTER 4: SHORELINE, BIRDS, PARTICLE INSTANCING | 642 MB Chapter One: Sprite Rendered Smokestacks In chapter one, sprite rendered smoke is added to several of the refinery's smokestacks. Topics include: Importing the image plane, aligning the 3D camera, adding 3D reference geometry, volume emission, fields, sprite set-up, expressions, adjusting particle speed without changing behavior, hardware rendering separate elements, motion blur, particle disk caching, compositing, color correction and final integration. Chapter Two: Sky and Water Replacement In chapter two, the original sky and static water of the refinery photo are replaced. Using Photoshop, we mask out the original sky, replace it, then color correct to match the lighting of the scene. For the water we use Maya's Ocean Shader to create animated water that integrates perfectly into our scene, including reflection of the backplate and shore/pier intersection through the use of camera projections. Chapter Three: Rolling Sprite Fog In chapter three, animated fog is added to the Maya scene using volume emission, fields, sprites, expressions, disk caching, hardware rendering and motion blur. All necessary steps are discussed as we build the effect from scratch and integrate it into our composite. Final tweaks are added in After Effects including color correction, level adjustments, masking and movement. Chapter Four: Shoreline, Birds, Particle Instancing In this final chapter, we begin by adding a new foreground shoreline and some rocks in the water. We pull elements from a photo using masking, fringe removal and warping. We then move to Maya to create a dynamic flock of birds that fly into frame. The bird effect is created from scratch including joints, skinning, looping animation, UVs, texturing, particle instancing, emitters, fields, expressions, lighting, rendering and the final composite of the Refinery Project.
